Lipoedema Misunderstood Condition

Lipoedema is a chronic, progressive condition that affects the way fat is distributed in the body—most commonly in the legs, hips, buttocks, and sometimes the arms. It’s often misdiagnosed or dismissed as simple weight gain, yet it has distinct characteristics and deserves proper recognition and care.

What Is Lipoedema?
Lipoedema is a disorder of adipose tissue, primarily affecting women. It’s marked by:
Symmetrical fat accumulation, typically from the waist down
Painful, tender limbs that bruise easily
Fat that resists diet and exercise
A clear distinction between affected and unaffected areas, often with a “cuff” at the ankles or wrists
Unlike obesity, lipoedema fat is not metabolically active in the same way and does not respond to conventional weight loss strategies.
Why It Matters
Many women with lipoedema feel unheard, frustrated, or ashamed. They may be told to “just lose weight” without understanding the underlying condition. This can lead to emotional distress, disordered eating, and a sense of isolation.
At Barbara Pabis Nutrition, I take a compassionate, evidence-based approach to support women with lipoedema. I understand the physical and emotional toll it can take—and I am here to help. I know what you feel I HAVE LIPOEDEMA myself !
How Nutrition Can Support Lipoedema
While there is no cure, targeted nutrition and lifestyle strategies can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life:
Anti-inflammatory dietary patterns to reduce pain and swelling
Gut health support to address systemic inflammation
Low glycaemic load meals to stabilise insulin and reduce fat deposition
Lymphatic-friendly hydration and movement protocols
Emotional support and body-positive coaching
